Aims: Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (JSRPD) was founded to promote the activities for persons with disabilities in every way possible both within and outside Japan. Through research and survey and by enhancing international cooperation, JSRPD strives to promote rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.

1964 September Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Physically Disabled People was established. Mr. Motome IKEZUMI was the first President.
1970 November The name of the Society was changed to Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (JSRD). Current name is Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (JSRPD).
1971 January Distribution of “Study of Current Rehabilitation” and “International Rehabilitation News” to the members of the Society began.
1978 September Mr. Hirokuni DAZAI became the President of the Society.
1980 April Dissemination of International Symbol of Access started.
1981 April In commemoration of the former Emperor’s 80th birthday, the Society received a donation with which the Fund to Promote the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities was established.
Under agreement with the Duskin Ainowa Foundation, the Society started a study program to send young Japanese people with disabilities to the U.S.A.
Publication of the monthly magazine, “Welfare of Persons with Disabilities,” began.
1982 April His Imperial Highness Prince HITACHI became Royal Patron of the Society.
1983 March In commemoration of the former Empress’ 80th birthday, the Society received a donation to the Fund above.
1984 March April Under agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Society started training courses for rehabilitation experts and leaders of persons with disabilities from developing countries.
1984 October Entrusted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (presently the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare), the Society started the management of National Welfare Center for Persons with Disabilities.
1987 June The Society organized its first Annual National Rehabilitation Conference.
1988 Septembe The Society hosted the 16th RI World Congress in which 2,800 persons from 93 different countries participated.
1990 April Promotion of the activities concerning rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in the Asia Pacific region started.
1990 December In commemoration of the enthronement of Emperor AKIHITO, the Society received a donation.
1991 August Rehabilitation Action Network for Asia and the Pacific (RANAP) was established and the Society started to serve as its Secretariat.
1992 Septembe December Jointly with Japanese Federation of Organizations of Physically Disabled Persons (presently Japanese Federation of Organizations of the Disabled Persons), Japan Council for International Year of Disabled Persons (presently Japan Council on Disability) and Japan National Council of Social Welfare, the Society organized the National Congress to mark the end year of the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons.
1993 February Mr. Maomi YAMASHITA became the President of the Society.
1993 October The Society organized Campaign ’93 Regional NGO Conference in Okinawa to promote the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons.
Consequently, RNN (Regional NGO Network for the Promotion of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons) was established and the Society started to serve as its Secretariat.
1993 December JANNET (Japan NGO Network on Disabilities) was established and the Society started to serve as its Secretariat.
1994 April Promotional Council of the New Decade, Japan was established by Japan Council on Disability (JD), Japanese Federation of Organizations of Physically Disabled Persons (presently Japanese Federation of Organizations of the Disabled Persons), Japan National Council of Social Welfare and the Society.
1994 December The Society celebrated its 30th anniversary with the presence of His Imperial Highness Prince HITACHI.
1996 Septembe The Society launched the Project of the Information Network for Persons with Disabilities (NORMANET).
A storage to stockpile relief goods and a system of emergency information services for persons with disabilities in case of disasters were established.
1996 October The Society launched the Project to Promote Comprehensive Studies of Health and Welfare for Persons with Disabilities.
1997 December The Society launched the operation of the Disability Information Resources (DINF)
1998 April The Society launched the DAISY (Digital Accessible Information SYstem) and other related projects of information technology for persons with disabilities.
1998 Septembe Japanese Council on Broadcasting for Persons with Disabilities was established by 16 (presently 21) organizations for/of persons with disabilities.
1999 May Under agreement with the Duskin Ainowa Foundation, the Society started a training program for young people with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific.
2000 December Organizing Committee for International Forum on Disabilities to Mark the End Year of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons was established by 7 disabilities-related organizations to implement the projects.
2002 October International Forum on Disabilities to Mark the End Year of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons was held.

2003 March Mr. Ichiro KANEDA became the President of the Society
2003 October Preparatory Committee of Japan Disability Forum (JDF) was established by 11 disabilities-related organizations with an aim to promote the Second Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons and disability policies as well as the rights of persons with disabilities.
2003 November Asia Pacific Disability Forum (APDF) to promote the Second Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons was established and the Society started to serve as its Secretariat.
2004 April The Society started the Training Project for Leaders of Volunteer PC Instructors.
2004 October Japan Disability Forum (JDF) was established and the Society started to serve as its Secretariat.
2007 October The 30th anniversary Annual National Rehabilitation Conference was held.
